The Open With Menu

Mac OS has the ability for one application to open files with another. This is how Open With in the Finder is implemented.

Yate allows you to open audio files in other applications using this mechanism. You can open audio files from the main window and from Track databases. You can also open folders from Album databases. There is no guarantee that any other application is capable of properly opening files in this manner or which file types they can open.

The mechanism is done on the File menu's Open With submenu. The menu contains an Add Application menu item. The menu item allows you to select an application in the Applications folder. The selected application will be added to the File>Open With menu.

When an application's name on the File>Open With menu is selected the following will occur:

If the main window is active
all selected files will be opened in the chosen application

If a Track database is active
the files associated with all selected rows will be opened in the chosen application.

if an Album database is active
the folders associated with all selected rows will be opened in the chosen application.

Open files in this manner can take a while. The process can be cancelled via the File>Cancel menu item.

Applications can be removed from the Open With menu by holding down the Shift key and selecting the application you want to remove.

This functionality can be used to open files in the play queue of various audio players. We've had various degrees of success with Audirvana, Swinsian, VLC and VOX. Note that iTunes/Music/TV do not properly handle this type of open. At most one file is processed and as a side effect it is added to the application's library.
