You can preview tracks in the main list of files by selecting the tracks you want to listen to and hitting the spacebar. Alternately, you can use the Preview toolbar item or the Preview context menu item.

You can preview anything in the File Browser's list of files by selecting items and hitting the spacebar. Alternately, you can use the Preview context menu item.

You can preview tracks in a track database by selecting items and hitting the spacebar. Alternately, you can use the the Preview context menu item.

When a preview is displayed you can switch to a new list of items by triggering a new preview, (spacebar, etc.). When a preview is triggered on items already being previewed, the preview is closed.

The Preferences-General-Update Preview on selection change allows you to specify that you want a preview to automatically change when you select a different item. For example in the main list of files, if you are previewing a track and you select a different track, that track will start playing. Note that changing a selection will only update a preview if it is in the same area that started the preview. If you started a preview in the main list of files, selecting an item in the File Browser will not automatically update the preview. If you want to update the preview in that case you'll have to trigger the preview again.
