I've lost almost all of my pinned folders

Normal topicI've lost almost all of my pinned folders

Not the end of the world but I'm always skitting around between locations & now my list of nearly 50 pinned folders has been reduced to about 4.

Sub-optimal to say the least.

Is there anything I can do to get them back or is it just a case of pinning them all again?

EDIT: I have a strange looking entry in the file list. My external hard drive (called "CHOONZ") is showing as a folder icon with a no entry symbol & seems to have been replaced by something called "CHOONZ 1". I have no idea what this means. Perhaps it's the cause of the issue?

(It may always have been like this & I just so happened to have never looked before.)

So, I notice that all the missing pinned folders are all from the external hard drive & I've been having some weird issues with it recently, in that it was working but not as well as it should have been. I was unable to run any diagnostics on the external hard drive, etc.

I restarted everything this morning with a different ethernet dongle & everything seems to be working a little better. Disk repair was able to run successfully (which it wouldn't before) & gave everything the green light.

It seems reasonable to assume that, following this process, the "address" of each of the previously pinned folders has now changed, which would explain the situation.

Which would also explain why, for the past few weeks, every time I've saved changes to a folder of files, Yate has given me a pop up box telling me the address has changed & I have to check a checkbox & apply to all files. Previously, it had only done that if I'd changed the name of the holding folder outside of Yate but recently it had been doing it for everything.

Let's see if it still does that now that my system is refreshed.

Pinned folders are automatically removed if they cannot be accessed. If you've pinned folders on a removable drive and accessed the menu when the drive was not connected ... the folders will disappear. The same will happen if you delete a pinned folder.

That icon with the red minus sign does not look too good. It means that you do not have privilege to view the folder. Also the external drive icon indeed shows CHOONZ 1. I have no idea why the name would have ben changed. It almost looks as if there are two mounts or perhaps the mount is messed up.

Unfortunately external drives are prone to failures. Perhaps run Disk Utility on the drive to repair it. At the least do a Finder Get Info on the CHOONZ folder to see what the privilege settings are.

Yeah, disk repair checks out & it's accessing the files okay through CHOONZ 1 but I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks.

Here is what Disk Repair is showing...

It looks a little odd to my eyes but, as I'm not an IT specialist, it might be fine.

Maybe the folds with the no entry sign is the holding volume & the partitioned volume is the CHOONZ 1 part. *shrugs*

I shall chat to one of the IT guys at work tomorrow & see what they say. (I'm actually more curious about the snapshot of the main hard drive than the external volume. What's that all about?? 😆

Snapshots are typical for APFS formatted drives. It's all automatic as far as I know.

However ... your Owner on the external drive is showing as Disabled. I'm pretty sure your permissions are messed up on the drive. Try doing a Get Info and viewing/fixing the permissions.

All that being said ... I've never yet sen an external USB drive not fail eventually. I realize the drive is 18tb but I hope you have a backup. On my stuff I have backups and backups of backups and backups of backups of backups, etc.

Yes, something's definitely messed up. I thought I'd turned a corner this morning but now the drive won't mount again.

Everything's backed up in the cloud.
