Normal topicOverwhelmed beginner: how do I group tunes by genre?

Hi. I got Yate some time ago, every so often I try using it and after half an hour I give up, overwhelmed by the sheer user unfriendliness of it all.

I have a large amount of mp3 files, all tagged by genre, and I would like to get a listing / grouping / whatever you want to call it / of all the files that match genre X. For bonus points, even better if I can get a match for genres starting with string "xxxx", but a complete match would do.

Can anyone help? thanks

Yate does many things that are outside the scope of a traditional tagger. When you have a specific request such as yours it is not always obvious how to handle it.

I would suggest the creation of a track database. Once you have the database you can sort on Genre and filter such that you can select or hide genres starting with any pattern.

Once you have the datavbase you can use it to open files directly in the main window. Alternately you can configure Yate to automatically update files in the main window when the database is updated .... or do it after the fact.

There is a document named A Database Workflow which you can find on Yate's resources page in the Documentation section. You can quickly get to the resources page via Help>Resources (Sample Actions, Templates, Documentation). Alternately you can create a bookmark to the page via Help>Search Yate Help. Right click in the left panel and select Create Resource Bookmarks. The document refers to the Create Database Utility. You can either download and install it manually from the resource page or do a Yate>Resource Actions Installer. Search for Create Database; check it and hit the Install Checked Actions button.

The only thing you have to do manually for the Create Database Utility is create an Export Set describing the fields that you want in the database. This is done is Settings - Export Sets.

Once you have the database (typically a CSV file), you can open it in Yate and use the ⌘F functionality to filter however you wish. The viewer window has a help button descring other things you can do,
