Normal topicDiscogs API Changes

On Feb 1, 2014 Discogs changed the way that artwork can be accessed via their API.

From this point on access must be authenticated and a limit of 1000 images per application per day has been imposed. This means that all Yate users would share an available download of 1000 images per day.

We are investigating the changes to see what can be done. Obviously, a total of 1000 images a day renders the downloading of artwork from Discogs fairly unusable.

If you enable using Discogs data in the MusicBrainz wizard, the Discogs image downloads will currently fail. MusicBrainz artwork linked to the Cover Art Archive is unaffected.

Could you implement a form to paste our own API keys then?

It will not work. The application must have its unique identification code and must properly identify itself in a API calls. Their intent is to limit the downloading of artwork to 1000 images/day/application.

I have implemented what is I think the best approach in v2.6. The View Artwork button now takes you to their site where all the artwork for a particular release is displayed.

As a follow up.

People have been requesting the ability to pay for enhanced Discogs access on a per user basis. Evidently there was such paid access in the past and it has now been cancelled.

The Discogs API changes clearly address applications, not users, as entities.

Thanks for clearing things up. This is bad news…
There is currently no better source for electronic music.

Just read the official Discogs statement: »If you would like to make image requests beyond the standard 1,000 per day, please contact us.«

Maybe they have a specific solution for Yate!?

Can you please send me the link where you found the statement. I'm looking at the API thread in the form where they made the announcement and I can't find anything. They used to say that in the past but the premium accounts have been discontinued. Their forum does not discuss any relief.

That's the old page. I guess they haven't updated it yet.

There is a lot of talk on their API forum. They did this to dramatically drop the bandwidth required for downloading lot's of artwork. They cancelled all special rights accessing outright. Not too talkative except to threaten someone proposing scraping the website; which we would not consider doing.
