I have become aware that there are both a Group tag and a Grouping tag. Yate provides Grouping by default and some recent classical downloads have come with Grouping already filled in. Other programs, e.g., MinimServer, seem to be using Group instead of Grouping for a similar purpose. Recently Auralic has added a feature so that the Lightning DS App will recognize the Group tag (but not Grouping). I have managed to create a custom tag in Yate for Group that I can use to manually duplicate (copy & paste) the Grouping tag info. Two questions: 1) is there a way to map Grouping and Group to be equivalent in order to save me the extra work of duplicating the Grouping info into the Group tag? 2) Do you have any idea why these two tags are being used interchangeably, is there a correct one? Some control Apps recognize one and not the other while others don't use either.

1. There is no way in Yate to write two tags from one field. However you can create an action which automatically runs when you save a file in the UI. You can have a single line in the action which copies Grouping to Group or the other way around. That way you don't have to remember to do it. Having the two tags in the file is a negligible amount of data. You activate a run-on-save action in Preferences-Actions.

2. More than likely two tags are being used in order to differentiate from Apple's totally non standard method of writing the Grouping tag. They implemented it years ago when they decided to remap Work Name to the standard low level mapping for Grouping. Since then people have had to live with Apple recognizing the Grouping metadata or everyone else. If you do a Help>Search Yate Help and enter Grouping, you'll see a topic called Classical Metadata and the Grouping Field. It describes the sordid history and what is being done. As far as any one being correct ... tag standardization is largely a dream. In my opinion Apple's mapping for Grouping is invalid and when it was first enforced it broke many a collection.

BTW: this is similar to Work. Most players and servers tend to use Work as opposed to Apple's Work Name.

Ugh, Apple, I should have guessed. Thanks for the explanation. Honestly, other than for downloading music files on my Mac I never let an Apple product touch my music. Freeing myself from iTunes was the best decision I ever made. It would be nice if everyone adopted the Work and Part tags (or any kind of standard). The problem is that every time there is a change in tag usage, it is impractical to retag your entire music library.
