It's a very minor thing, but I find it really helpful that when one of the "replace" fields is empty, "this optional text" appears in grey. (This is often because I'm replacing something with nothing as a way of deleting it.)

Another thing I often do, if the characters I'm deleting are not the same, is to remove a certain number of characters from, say, the beginning of a title field. For this I'll use the "remove & insert" function. It would be really handy if the text field in the "remove & insert" editor also had greyed out text when empty. It would save me having to check every time that there isn't a word space or similar in there.
