Hi again

I recently added jriver media center as a secondary player alongside Apple Music.

for some reason jriver media center does not pick up any rating changes I do in late (and ones that Apple Music does pickup)

any clue what im doing wrong here? im using the standard yate built in rate fields

best regards

You're not doing anything wrong. 🙂

Ratings are a mess as there are no standards. Every player can pretty much adopt whatever interpretation of rating metadata that it desires.

Apple Music (the app) works fine as when you're linked to a track in Music and you save a file, Yate force feeds the rating into Music's library. The ratings are not read from the file.

JRiver is one of the strangest players as they adopt a 10 star rating system. When properly configured Yate's 5 star system will map into JRiver's 10 star system.

Yate can work with any player's interpretation ... but it almost always involves rewriting all your audio files to update the encoded ratings values.

There are application presets in Yate but DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES at this time. The remapping of the ratings is tricky,

Do a Help>Search Yate Help and search for How Ratings Work. Read the topic and the additional information links. If you want to go ahead and adjust the ratings in all your files, let me know and we'll work out the exact workflow.

It's been a long time since I looked at JRiver and I'd have to go go back and check to make sure that nothing has changed.

I've downloaded and installed JRiver. It seems as if nothing has changed. All my presets assume the 5 star display in JRiver as opposed to the 10 star display. Actually it should not matter except in FLAC files where they write 5 star ratings. (This may be configurable).

Based on this, a bulk rewrites of the ratings so that they are understood by JRiver should be possible.

hi again

I cant seem to still get jriver to read my yate tagged files

this is what the jriver said:

iTunes simply does not tag the rating field.

I tried MP3Tag and it doesn't support setting rating either.

WMP didn't write the rating tag.

The tool you were using does write the tag.

but I know yate DOES write the tag 😀

any clue?

best

Z

I just selected JRiver Media Center from the Application preset control in Preferences - Audio - Common.

I set the rating on various test files in Yate and put them in a folder supposedl managed by JRiver. The files appeared incorrect in JRiver. In JRiver I did a Tools>Library Tools>Update Library (from tags). I then added the files to Apple's Music application. See the two screenshots.

Everything seems fine to me. DO NOT SET THE APPLICATION PRESET. If you do you will mess up the ratings already stored in the files with a different encoding.

If you've already stored ratings in files with Yate they have to be converted to JRiver encoding. If you do a Help>Search Yate Help and enter Notes on Translating Ratings you'll locate the article which describes the process. When the process is run, any file with a rating will have to be rewritten. This process will not mess up what you have in Music.

If you want to do the translation (re-encoding) I can write the action for you. It's only one or two lines. However, I won't do it until I see your current settings. If you want to proceed, do a Yate>Export Preferences. Press the All button and check Export as zip file. Send the exported file to support@2manyrobots.com

I'll take a look at the file when I get a chance. I'm pretty busy with family stuff over the next few weeks.

Hi. I answered this already in my previous post. See the screenshots. I can configure Yate such that files are encoded in a manner that JRiver can read the ratings.

Regardless of the file encoding, iTunes/Music will not read the ratings from the files. Yate has the ability to set the ratings in iTunes/Music whenever a file is linked. This works regardless of the file encoding (as long as Yate knows what the encoding is).

There are a number of library settings that iTunes/Music does not read from the audio files.

thx again for your kind help! im not sure im following though..

you start by saying to "selected JRiver Media Center from the Application preset control in Preferences - Audio - Common" but then you mention "DO NOT SET THE APPLICATION PRESET." :)..so im confused 🙂 I tried with both the default YATE application present and jriver, rate a file but it does not get picked up by jriver 🙂

thx again for your patience

I can't see any screenshots but they may not be necessary.

Great that's proof that you can encode files that appear correctly in JRiver and Music.

I said DO NOT SET THE APPLICATION PRESET because I assumed that you had audio files which had ratings before you set the application preset. Depending of the type of audio file, changing the application preset may make pre-existing ratings invalid. This is what I was trying to avoid. If you want to preserve existing ratings there is a procedure that you have to follow. If you're basically going to set ratings from here out, simply do what worked.
