Hmm... it would be possible to check for files which have the new format and the same month and day. If the creation dates on the files are relevant, the day could be extracted or a list of files could simply be produced.

Let me know if any of these would help.

Further to the above, I wonder if it's possible to extract meta-data & use it in the file name?

As you can see from the screenshot, these earlier imports were from a point before I discovered that I could import through Bridge & configure a file name, so they were just given a default name. They do however contain the creation date info which I can manually type into the file name to make them the same as everything else.

But, before I embark upon manually re-naming a thousand images, I'm just wondering what's possible?

Can I get a "year-month-day hours.minutes.seconds - IMG_xxxx" file name from the available data?

Yes. Yate has access to the creation and modified date and they can be formatted however you wish.

An action to prepend the creation date to the existing filename is easy.

YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss - old filename

Just confirm that is what you want. ie. change all selected files or files in a folder to the above?

Is there other criteria you'd want? Shall I limit it to jpg files?

Wow!

Okay, great. The hyphens are correct in the date, full stops not colons in the time, please, but otherwise yes that's it.

I suppose it would be handy for it to not mind what the file type is. (The other action caught me out because the files come in as CR2 & it didn't work until I tried changing them all to cr2 & then it was fine. It's no bother though, I hate file extensions in CAPS so I'd have changed them anyway but for the other action I have to change them first.)

But for this, if it doesn't mind the file extension, I guess that would make it future proof. 🙂

I've written an action which can be downloaded at:

https://2manyrobots.com/actions/Prepend-Creation-Date-to-Non-Audio-Files.zip

The action is called Prepend Creation Date to Non Audio Files

You'll have to update to Yate v6.20.0.1 which was released today. In the course of writing the action I found a bug in code from 2014.

You'll have to enter a list of filename extensions which are to be modified. It seemed to risky to simply modify all files in a folder. The list is case insensitive. In fact if a file is renamed, the filename extensions are always forced to lower case. .JPG will become .jpg

If you run it on files which have already been modified, the text will not be prepended again.

As in some of the previous actions, it operates on all contents of a folder. It could be modified to accept files and to optionally process all nested folders. Let me know.

Please test before you run it over all your files.
