Normal topicRatings between Audirvana & JRiver

I use two both Audirvana and JRiver for different purposes and one of the things I would like to be able to see/synchronize in Yate is the rating for each. I would be fine with one mapped to the Yate rating and the other a custom field and then just use an action to translate & copy where null.

Music is a mix of ALAC, FLAC, DSF, AAC & even some MP3 😀

Is this possible? Or is the rating tag the same for each & I have to choose one or the other?

Ratings are unfortunately a nightmare.

While Yate has defaults ratings mappings, it can use any set of mappings. The rating mapping differences are divided into three groups: ID3 (MP, DSF,...), MPEG (ALAC, AAC) and FLAC. the same low level tags are used and it is only the value ranges which change.

I would pick Audirvana or JRiver and then you can set the rating in whichever you choose and in Yate. This is probably the best you can do.

Personally I would choose Audirvana as it is 'more' standard than JRiver. River is the only audio application I've seen which uses a non iTunes compatible MPEG rating range.

You can select the proper settings for either in Preferences>Audio via the Presets control.

Some background:
I use Audirvana for "desktop" listening where I would prefer to "set" rating.
But I use JRiver for streaming around the house and beyond as well as (this is the most critical) syncing with my hand held devices (Fiio X7 & X5II)

I use smart playlists in JRiver based on rating in many cases (e.g. 4-5 rating songs in the classic rock genre) to populate my handhelds.

If Audirvana had a good export/copy function, I wouldn't use JRiver to sync to handheld, but it doesn't.

If what you're saying is that Audirvana & JRiver use the same rating tag, but use different value ranges, I think I'm just not going to be in a happy place until they change or I do. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

And, as always, thank you for your AMAZING help and absolutely the best product on the market bar none.

Yah, everyone uses the same tags. In theory the ID3 spec can handle multiple ratings but as far as I know, no audio player supports multiples. Every application simply picks and chooses what values they want to use, while they all use pretty much the same low level tag constructs. It is possible that JRiver lets you change the mappings. If they do, you can always use alternate low level tags and then set the ratings in JRiver and manually set them in Yate as well (using UDTIs as opposed to Rating). You could even have an action in Yate to set both rating styles at once. Regardless, its going to be a pain.

This issue has been around as long as as digital music and I wouldn't hold my breathe waiting for any application to change.
