I need to edit some elements of folder names, as per the screenshot.

In essence, this will be finding & replacing BLeg- for BBC Legends & then deleting the three characters after that, which I could now do quite easily using the tools I've become accustomed to. (The rest will have to be researched & added manually.)

However, I can't see "Path" as an entry that I can choose to edit, so where might I go to edit the name of a holding folder?

Files and folders are renamed via rename templates. This can be done in the UI or via an action. If the renaming is not based on the simple content of fields and requires more complicated logic, it has to be done in an action.

In your attached screenshot am I correct in assuming that:

BLeg-180 41992 - E. Svetlanov

becomes:

BBC Legends 41992 - E. Svetlanov

???

Let me know and I'lll produce a sample action for you.

Yes, that's correct.

In my feeble imaginings, I was supposing I might be able to create a "folder start" action that then opens some variant of the Multi Field Editor, allowing me to specify the things that need to change, as I would with files.

That way, the one action becomes useful for any job, rather than just this one.

So, now tell me how it really works! 😀

Well one way would be to include in the action all the possible changes you would make. As I have no idea what changes you would make, the action I've written will pop up a panel letting you edit the value before the folder is renamed.

You can load as many files from multiple folders if you wish. Select all those that you want to process. If you alway want to process all loaded files you can set the All Files property in the Action Manager.

You can download the action at:

https://2manyrobots.com/actions/Snowdog- Sample folder rename.zip

Drag the zip file to the main windows file list area and you'll have an action named: Snowdog: Sample folder rename

I've documented the action 🙂

The link is missing half its definition for some reason. Try:

My bad the link has a space in it which the forum does not like.

Let's hope the third time is the charm 🙂

Thanks.

Okay, so when I run that (assuming I'm running it correctly) I get the following:

Hmmm.... please run it again and copy whatever is in the text field when you click on Rename Folder. Please paste it into a reply post.

Okay, as always, I'm feeling super dumb now, but what you've asked would imply that something should come up for me to type into, which it doesn't.

I go to the top & choose the action, with the relevant folders selected on the left & then I get the error.
