Hot topicActionhelp (Album Artist and rename files)

Hi, long time user of Yate, but in need for help with some actions.

Album artist
Calculate/determine the album artist following these rules:

  • Per track make a list of all artists present (artists could be commaseparated in the artist field or present as multiple values)
  • Per track substract/eliminate remixer from list above if remixer is present
  • Accumulate list per album and find the one artist that is present the most. If 2 or more artists is equally present chose both (or all) as album artist, commaseparated and sorted in alphabetical order. Perhaps album needs to be defined as unique with some kind of concatenation of label, catalog number and album?
  • If album consists of more than X tracks, and most common artist/-s is present below Y percent of all artist, set album artist as "VA" and mark "part of a Compilation". X and Y should be set in the script, i.e. x=4 and y=0.5.
  • I might have overlooked some elements to be taken care of, but I think you see what I would like to achieve.

    File renaming
How do I rename a file with all artist names when these names are present In Yate as multiple values? Or how do I get my artists tagged as commaseparated and not as multiple values when already tagged as multiple values?

    Album Artist

As source for the Artist list what fields would you like to use: Artist and Album Artist? Musician Credits? I can also find "featuring" sequences from the Title and Artist fields. I already have an action which will accumulate artists from Artist, Album Artist and Musician Credits. Removing Remixer if present is not an issue.

Based on the "album uniqueness" comment I assume that you are going to run more than a single album through at a time. Is this correct?

    File Renaming

Regardless as to how they are stored in the files, all fields are simply text once loaded. If you want to change:

    A;;;B;;;C

    to:

    A,B,C

simply the replace the ;;; sequence with a comma, or whatever you'd like. When the file gets written if no ;;; sequences are found there will not be any multiple values. The escape sequence \~ (backslash tilde) always represents whatever you use as the multi character delimiter. A small percentage of users still replace ;;; with something else (not advised!)

If you want to keep the multiple values except when renaming. Copy the Artist field to a Variable, do the above replacement and rename using the Variable.

It may take a day or two to get you the "Album Artist" action. I've got a few other things to finish 🙂

Thx for a quick reply, and very much appreciated if you can help me out 🙂

As source for artist list it's enough to use the artist and album artist.
Regarding "album uniqueness" I would like to run more than a single album through at a time. Some files are organized nicely with one album per folder, but others are a bit mess with files from same album in different folders. I'm in the process of organizing everything in this structure: Album Artist/Album (catalog number)/artist/-s - title.ext

Oops as more than a few people pointed out...the multi value delimiter is \m not \~. I'm so used to using the context menus for insertion that I'm forgetting the escape sequences 🙂

    Question:

Is there any case where the number of tracks is < X and I still write the Album Artist field? Do I leave it as is? Do I save whatever I've accumulated?

You should always write the the album artist, even if number of tracks < X. The X and Y rule is only to determine if the album artist should be "VA" instead of artistname from the list.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean regarding save whatever accumulated?

Okay just a little confusion on my part. Not so unusual 🙂

By accumulated I meant the artist(s) chosen as the Album Artist.

I'll post something later today. A couple of tweaks and a little more testing.

The action was written in the upcoming v3.14.2 and I just realized that some features I used are new. I've modified the action to work in the released version. You can download it here:

Let me know what I missed.

    Have fun 🙂

Thank you. Really appreciate all your work with Yate and everything around it 🙂

Just tried the action, and it changes the artist field as well as the album artist field? It is only the album artist field that should be set.
It looks like you got the album artist "rule" right and also the "VA"-rule.

    Thanks, Lappen

Sorry, for some reason I thought you wanted Artists sorted, etc. as well.

The action at the following link does not modify the Artist field.

    https://2manyrobots.com/actions/Lappen-ArtistCleanup2.zip

The new action's name has a '2' at the end.
