Normal topicAll my Icons reverted back to default

Hello there,
I have a problem that has appeared ever since I restored my music library from a backup. All of my Plaster icons have revered back to mac default icons. A file called "icon?" is present in each directory. Can I re-establish my custom icons?
My files reside on Qnap TS-251+ NAS. I'm using OSX 10.12 when accessing it. However icons are default appearance both in the QTS file manager app and in Finder.

thanks!

When the files were restored some attribute was not not set in the file system. The icon? files are the icon but but they must not be hooked correctly. The icon? file is created by the system API called by Plaster when it creates the icon. There is more than likely no way to restore the icons.

Folder Album Artwork which is also free can automate the saving of icons extracted from audio files. Yate (not free) can do the same.

If I access my backup and restore the files again would that allow me to retain the hooks or links and if so is there something I need to specify in the restore process? Restoring does require me to create shared parent folders that the files will be returned to... I'm wondering if I need to set anything as an attribute or such in the receiving folders.

Unfortunately I have no idea. Plaster uses a Mac OS API to set the icon. It does not directly set the attributes in the file system. I also have a QNAP NAS and the icon? files should be hidden. When the icon? file is created by the system it actually appears in the folder and then gets hidden. The API does something regarding attributes that works but is not getting restored. More than likely it is an extended attribute.

I should also mention that the icons are folder icons, not file icons. I used Yate to populate my music files, then stored them by artist under a folder which I used Plaster to link the Bands image. I'm hoping I haven't lost them as I have close to 600 artist folders.

I'll try another restore (backup) to see if there is anything I may have missed.

I'm not even sure what is in the icon? file. I can't even use HexFiend to see what's inside.

It turns out that the Icon? file is actually stored in a resource fork in the extended attributes of a file. That's why the files have a zero length. I can extract the data from the fork but it must be specially encoded as it is not an icns, jpeg or png format.

Interesting.

I've found a resource tool for viewing/editing the resource fork on the mac file system. Rezilla. Going to try and figure out if the original file gets truncated when moved to QNAP file structure.
